The 2018 Merzouga Rally was presented today in the conference room of Las Palmas, headquarter of the 2018 Dakar Rally in Lima in front of the International media, teams and competitors.
Marc Coma, Director of the event, presented the main characteristics of the rally, part of Dakar Series, that will take place from the 15th to the 20th of April 2018 in Morocco.
“The Merzouga Rally is ideal to discover the cross country discipline in a friendly atmosphere but also for the Pro to train in the desert. The focus is on the navigation, so amateur and experienced riders can learn a lot and in fact the competitors who finish the Merzouga Rally will see their dossier for the Dakar approved”.
A real stepping stone to the Dakar, 47 competitors of the 2017 Merzouga Rally are at the start of the Dakar in Lima. The last edition saw 176 competitors of 28 different nationalities for a total number of 144 vehicles (88 bikes, 23 quads, 33 Sxs).
“The Merzouga has always believed in the SXS category” said Edo Mossi, “last year we had a record number of 33 vehicles and we expect more in 2018. This is a new category also on the Dakar and the 13 vehicles enrolled in the 2018 confirm the increasing interest in this category which is an attractive solution for bikers looking for a change of scenery, an entry level for car competitors or budget-conscious drivers, as well as a gateway to the Dakar”. Camelia Liparoti is a good example. After nine consecutive Dakar finishes by quad, she made her debut on a Yamaha SxS at Merzouga and finished 2nd. “I’m thankful to the Merzouga Rally because I discovered this fun to ride machine and I trained a lot also in terms of navigation, so I really recommend it”, said the Franco-Italian.
Among the competitors who attended the presentation, Yamaha rider Franco Caimi also expressed his satisfaction: “I really liked the formula of the Merzouga Rally and I learned a lot. I attended Marc Coma’s classes and they were really useful. I look forward to take part again this year”.
The Merzouga Rally has become a must among the riders of the new Dakar Generation on the sports but also on the media visibility side with 1,5 million videos viewed and a community of 37,000 fans on the social media.
Part of the Dakar Series, 3 free registration for the Dakar will be awarded to the overall winner, fastest rider and fastest SxS driver without any participation on the Dakar. Inscriptions are already open and all information are available on www.merzougarally.com.
