6TH STAGE FROM MOROCCO TO MAURITANIA: DAKHLA / CHAMI: 650 KM

After a very early morning waking up at 4am, all participants had to take the road by night for a 429 kilometers liaison with the crossing of the border. The 10th edition of the Africa Eco Race continues its journey in Mauritania where a first leg ending in the dunes after 211 kilometers.

New landscape
All the vehicles were able to reach Mauritania this morning without any trouble. A very good organization that even allowed the competitors to rest once they got to the start of the leg two hours before the race. A route that gave way to off-piste and sand. Leaving Boulanouar, the competitors quickly joined the mine's railway before arriving at a succession of off-piste tracks. A crossing of dune just before the arrival gave them a little taste of what will wait for them in the coming days and especially tomorrow with the marathon stage...

Straight on the dunes
It's a black buggy that has emerged first in the dune just before the finish line. Mathieu Serradori and Fabian Lurquin (FRA / MCM) were the fastest to win this leg, finishing 2'21" behind leaders Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov (RUS / MINI). With an average speed of 144 km / h, the French have still shown that they have a very good car. It was a very good day for Guillaume Gomez and François Borsotto (FRA / OPTIMUS) enjoying this stage, making their best performance on this leg. The crew of the team MD Rallye Sport takes the 3rd place and finally managed to solve all its mechanical problems to get back on the competition. A playground where the Optimus are going very weel as Pascal Thomasse and Pascal Larroque (FRA / OPTIMUS) had fun even if the dunes still worry the pilot, wishing to avoid to be trapped on the sand... They retain their 3rd place overall 1h30 ahead of Remy Vauthier and Jean Brucy (SUI / OPTIMUS).
The first truck remains the one of Gerard De Rooy (NL / IVECO) finishing 12th and still 5th overall.
In motorcycles, Luis Oliveira (POR / YAMAHA) continues to impress by being the fastest today. He won in 1h50'2" followed by Paolo Ceci (ITA / KTM) and Pal Anders Ullevalseter (NOR / KTM) .The three men who started with a two minute gap at the start came out of the last dune almost together. The Mauritanian fight is launched!

Mathieu SERRADORI:

"I do not know if it is a good operation to win today and open the marathon tomorrow ... But it was necessary to avoid wasting time with Vasilyev who followed his strategy keeping his advance. It was a warm-up leg here and everything went well, we are happy, Vasilyev let us pass, it will be difficult to make the opening in the dunes ... "

Vladimir VASILYEV:

"It was a strategic race but it was a leg for big engines with a straight line. For the marathon it will be necessary to keep a cool head without making mistakes for the car and for tires because we only have three spare wheels! "

Guillaume GOMEZ:

"We finally managed to do everything we could today, the mechanics, the navigation and the pleasure to pass the other cars. We drove without taking any risk, the navigation was not complicated but we had to stay focused. "

Gerard DE ROOY:

"It was a long day that started very early but crossing the border was quite fast, so we had to wait arriving early at the start of the leg. Some buggies doubled me, I was not the fastest but I will go slowly tomorrow, be careful and enjoy the sand. "

Luis OLIVEIRA:

"I drove quietly behind the guys then I accelerated to attack midway and managed to pass them just before the arrival. The sand in the dunes was very soft, I still could learn today with this 1st Mauritanian leg. "

Paolo CECI:

"It was almost like last year, I drove fast on the whole stage, I'm happy to ride with Pal and Luis. Tomorrow it will be complicated, he we will have to ride carefully without damaging the bike in the marathon event, and of course, not get lost. "

Pal Anders ULLEVALSETER:

"It was nice today, very fast all the way and not complicated in navigation. Tomorrow it will be very difficult, I hope nobody will get through but me!"

With the fifth fastest time, 35 minutes behind the Russian Vladimir Vasilyev, Gerard de Rooy crossed the finish line of the fourth stage of the Africa Eco Race. The difference with the Mini driver could have been smaller, De Rooy admitted. A navigation error cost the captain of Petronas Team De Rooy Iveco some 20 minutes.

“That was a bit of a shame, but we still managed to keep it up to speed today. We have been on 150 kms for at least 20 minutes. Especially in the last part it went very well.”

In the first part of the 499 kilometres long stage from Assa to Fort Chacal, De Rooy had to stop three times to vomit.

“Because we start from the bivouac in this rally, my breakfast does not have time to digest. I spoke about it with our doctor and from now on I have to get up a little earlier and have breakfast earlier, so that it has time to go down instead of making me sick.”

It did not make much of a difference for the standings. In the overall classification the gap to leader Vasilyev is 2.03.55. The difference with the top 3 is 1.20.

“In this phase the stages are long but fast and the cars have the advantage, because they can drive 180, 190 in places where a truck is limited to 150. Next week in Mauretania there will be enough stages where that difference is completely gone and where I can make up for time. I certainly have not put the podium out of my mind. A lot can still happen.”

De Rooy had already decided to take it relatively easy before the start of the stage, in order to avoid inconvenience such as damage and punctures. After all, he did not have any service around in case of emergency, because the assistance crews had already left for Fort Chacal last night to repair the truck of Wuf van Ginkel in daylight.

5TH STAGE IN MOROCCO
FORT CHACAL / DAKHLA : 631 KM
Last leg in Morocco
Once again, the 10th edition of the Africa Eco Race gave the competitors a new route. The day started with a light rain which enabled the dust to stay down for the rest of the day. A 436 kilometers leg brought the rally to Bir Anzaran passing the mighty phosphate conveyor belt of Laayoune. The track was very fast with some complicated navigation points. The competitors went straight south and finished the day with 174 kilometers liaison before reaching Dakhla for a well deserved rest day.

Vasilyev gets ahead, Ullevalseter for fun

vWith an average speed of 145 km/h, Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov (RUS / MINI) didn't waste any time! On this very fast leg, today's winners secured their slight lead on the overall standings before attacking the dunes of Mauritania. Mathieu Serradori and Fabian Lurquin (FRA / MCM) finished 2nd in 3h05'35, or 6'12" back from the leaders. After the first week they are 16'35" down in the overall ranking but consolidate their lead over Pascal Thomasse and Pascal Larroque (FRA / OPTIMUS), finishing 6th today. Patrick Martin and Didier Bigot (FRA / MERCEDES) took 3rd place ahead of Gerard De Rooy, Darek Rodewald and Moi Torrellardona (NL / IVECO), still the first truck of the competition. For his first participation, 10 years after his father, Gerard De Rooy will be able to rest peacefully with the 5th place overall.

In the motorcycles, Pål Anders Ullevalseter (NOR / KTM) was pleased despite his disappointing day yesterday because of a mechanical issue that forced him to abandon the leg. Although the battle for victory is over for him, the double winner of the Africa Eco Race had a lot of fun starting last and passing the other riders. He achieved the best time of the day in 4h00'11", 4 minutes faster than Paolo Ceci (ITA / KTM). The young Luis Oliveira (POR / YAMAHA) is still on the podium even if he loses a few minutes over Paolo Ceci still in the lead.
To concluded this first week, the couple Loic Bonnevie and Sophie Hamys (FRA / CAN AM) in SSV managed to climbs into the top 20 by taking the 18th place in the overall ranking.
The rest day have arrived, it is now time to take care of the vehicles and the bodies in Dakhla, the famous kitesurfing spot, where the bivouac stays on the breathtaking beach.

Vladimir VASILYEV:

It was mainly a straight line, it was very fast, it went well for us, as a foretaste of the rest day!

Mathieu Serradori:

"We drove fast but could not get back to Vasilyev, maybe we did not follow the good tracks at the beginning, we did not expect to waste time today but they were very strong. We are still fighting for the win with a good car in good conditions. It was our goal to approach Mauritania 15 minutes from the leader, it is the case, we are happy."

Pal Anders ULLEVALSETER:

"I started last and I had a lot of fun catching up and overtaking lots of competitors to win. I'm disappointed for not being in the fight for the win anymore but I managed to take a good time. Now I'm going to take some rest and will enjoy spending some time with the other competitors tomorrow. "

Paolo CECI:

"It was very fast today, it went well for me in navigation, I'm happy with my ride. It's a shame for my fight with Pål but it does not change anything for me, I have to stay focused, the road is still long. Now I can go and take some rest at the hotel, the bike is amazing. "

Luis OLIVEIRA:

"It was difficult for me with the navigation but it was very fast, some waypoints were hard to find but it was a good day and the adventure continues."

The fourth day in Morocco is a first with the longest leg of the Africa Eco Race since its creation. 497 kilometers with fast tracks and some sand. It's been a big fight in cars between Vasilyev and Serradori, in motorbikes Paolo Ceci settles his leadership.

The west rush

For this big premiere, the competitors drove close to the Oued Draa for a few kilometers on a sandy part before the rocks where the navigators had to be very focused. Ater M'seied a wide track brought them to the southern Moroccan desert. The vehicles got into some more fast tracks in the heart of massive plains with no much landscape and thus not many visual point to navigate with. It is a very complicated section with many possibilities to go in the wrong direction. As they got closer to the Oued Hamra things went harder. Totally flooded a year ago, all the tracks have disappeared, it has therefore become an off road section not easy to escape. Finally, they had to come across a dune before finishing the stage on e very fast wide track all the way to the bivouac in Fort Chacal.

Vasilyev as boss, Ullevalseter out
The long awaited auto duel of this edition is launched. The defending crew Vladimir Vasilyev - Konstantin Zhiltsov (RUS / MINI) and Mathieu Serradori - Fabian Lurquin (FRA / MCM) have engaged in an intense battle full of twists and turns. Leading, the French had to slow down in the last part of the leg because of a power steering problem. The Russians were able to take advantage but three punctures made them waste time and the two cars passed each other before Vasilyev won the final sprint 3'21" before Serradori. Pascal Thomasse and Pascal Larroque (FRA / OPTIMUS) confirm their 3rd place overall by finishing just in front of their partners at MD Rally Sport Guillaume Gomez and François Borsotto (FRA / OPTIMUS) who managed to finish the leg without mechanical problems.
In the motorbikes, very difficult day for the double winner Pal Anders Ullevalseter (NOR / KTM). His chances of winning this year are compromised because of a fuel tank problem that forced him to abandon the leg after 100 kilometers of racing. Paolo Ceci takes the opportunity to consolidate his leading position by winning the stage of the day 8'52" ahead of Luis Oliveira (POR / YAMAHA). A good operation for the Portuguese who takes the 2nd place in the overall ranking.

Vladimir VASILYEV :

"It was a great leg but Jean-Louis Schlesser did not spare us the punctures ... After three tires dead we did not have a spare wheel anymore! It was difficult especially at the end in navigation, we still have two minutes ahead of Serradori, it was a great fight today, we did not stop crossing each other, it was great. "

Mathieu Serradori :

"We opened the track with a good navigation before engaging in a great battle with the Russians, it was very intense! After 414 kilometers of racing I had no more power steering, it was very difficult to turn the wheels in the dunes but we wanted to finish and had to slow down. Finally we are doing very well thanks to Vasilyev's misadventures. Now we will have to repair and come back tomorrow."

Gérard DE ROOY :

"It was a long day but a very nice leg with a lot of navigation, I got lost once, the truck was fine, I drove slowly knowing that I did not have anyone behind me. I preferred to be careful. "

Pascal Thomasse :

"I did not see the time pass, it's weird, I found it short ... We had fun, I have a very good navigator, it was a beautiful day and the car is still going good. We remain optimistic even if it will be difficult to win."

Paolo CECI :

"It was a difficult leg with the navigation but I did not make any mistake, I drove with Oliveira up to 30 kilometers from the finish, physically I feel good but I'm disappointed because I could not fight with Ullevalseter. "

Luis OLIVEIRA :

"I'm still learning, it was a good day for me, I passed Ceci after 40 kilometers of racing and I opened the track for a while then I got lost and ended up finding Paolo's tracks until the finish. "

For the fourth consecutive year, the bivouac of this day rest is installed in Dakhla on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The mechanics were able to enjoy a full day of reconditioning vehicles on the beach with sea views. For drivers and co-drivers it was good to take care of the body and share some good moments with each other before taking the road again.

Animations for all

Some took advantage of a good bed with a night at the hotel last night, others preferred to stay on the bivouac, having a good time relaxing on the beach. Just like Team Dakar with its three SSV racing, "we love the atmosphere here, we do not need anything more" expressed Jean-Huges Moneyron and Thierry Maury (SEN / CANAM) 20th overall who expect to win a few more places in Mauritania. Despite a little sun and a windy weather, many brave went to bathe in the 14 degrees ocean. Young rider Kristian Felix Jensen (NOR / KTM) from Team Ullevalseter took the opportunity to take a surf lesson for the first time in his life. Smiling after a few minutes and a successful ride he said that "It was nice but difficult !". Meanwhile, Gerard De Rooy's team (NL / IVECO) was invited by Miklos Kovacs (HON / SCANIA) to taste the traditional Goulash. The crew of the Chti Friterie feasted the rest of the bivouac by distributing fries directly prepared from their racing "food truck".

Cleaning and mechanics
For the more conventional SUVs and those who participate in the raid without racing, they could finally take some time to do a great cleaning as they usually arrive later than other competitors at night. Bruno Bastide and Didier Chaudat (FRA / TOYOTA) in the T2 have been able to recover a piece to continue the adventure directly arriving from France and in the evening at Dakhla's airport. They were relieved to be able to go on the second week:
"We will have fun in Mauritania !". Julien Sanchez (FRA / KTM) has spent time responding to media requests, the french guy from Senegal had a lot of free time without mechanics on his bike.
Not like Noël Essers (BEL / MAN) who spent part  of  the  day  in  his  mechanic's outfit repairing a few things on his truck with a lot of pleasure: "it's not really work, it's fun".
As for the MD Rallye Sport team, the do-it-yourself and cleaning session was quick and efficient enough to finish off this day by enjoying their jacuzzi. All ended the evening, feasting with the famous barbecue of entrecote and braised potatoes offered by the caterer JDB jut like every year in Dakhla.

The fifth stage of the Africa Eco Race was once again a two-faced one for Petronas Team De Rooy Iveco. While Gerard de Rooy drove through the desert in the direction of Dakhla with a tearing pace,  Wuf van Ginkel had to stop at 86 kilometres into the special.
Ignorant of the problems of his backup driver De Rooy gave his Iveco Powerstar the spurs, to finish with in fourth overall at 36.48 of stage winner Vladimir Vasilyev, after 436 kilometres of racing.

“It was a very fast stage”, De Rooy told at the finish. “We have driven at a pace of 150 for at least 20 percent of the time. I couldn’t go faster. This desert is actually too big and too flat for us; ideal terrain for the cars, but not for us.”

As a result of the fast track, Vasilyev was able to extend his lead in the standings. The Russian now has 16.35 on his closest opponent Mathieu Serradori and 1.25.02 on Pascal Thomasse in third. De Rooy is in fifth overall, at 2.40.43 behind. The Czech Tomas Tomecek is the second truck, in twelfth overall at 5.06.38 behind on Vasilyev.
De Rooy lost about ten minutes in the middle of the stage by changing a tire.

“We hit a stone and had a slow puncture because of that. It was not completely broken yet, but it did not matter much, so it was better to change.”

While De Rooy was at the connection route of 175 kilometres from the finish line to the bivouac in Dakhla, Wuf van Ginkel was in the assistance truck of Hugo Duisters, with the Powerstar on the trailer. At 86 kilometres in the stage it went wrong again.

“Again the engine. Everything is leaking. The oil and water gush out,” says Van Ginkel. “I’m really annoyed, because it’s going to be a very difficult story now. Fortunately, tomorrow is rest day, so we have time to see what exactly is wrong and whether it can be solved.”

Elisabete Jacinto finished her participation in the tenth edition of the Africa Eco Race. The damage of the front differential of the team’s MAN TGS, which broke during yesterday's selective sector, was irreparable and although the team tried to find a solution to the problem, the procedures were fruitless.

It is to bring to mind that the differential of the truck broke at a time when the Portuguese were in second place in their category. The trio still managed to finish the third special only with the traction on the two rear wheels. On the arrival at the camp they worked hard to solve the situation but it wasn’t possible to find a solution that would allow the Portuguese to continue the race.

However, Elisabete Jacinto will continue to follow the race until Dakar:

"We have made every effort to find a solution to our problem. We talked to the competitors who had trucks similar to ours, but none of them had the piece. We contacted the importer in Portugal and there was a possibility of having the piece coming from Casablanca. Our idea was to repair the truck on the rest day and continue the race from Mauritania on. But because of the weekend this hypothesis was soon made impracticable because they needed at least four working days to send the piece. Now our option is to continue until Dakar. Marco and Helder arranged a way to get the truck rolling down the road, which was also an unprecedented experience. I'm really sorry for what happened because the shock absorbers were excellent for the first time, which allowed me to ride quite fast. Zé was doing a perfect navigation job, and everything ran beautifully when this happened. It was indeed a huge frustration for everyone" said the driver.

Today was the fourth stage of the Africa Race that had a special of 499 timed kilometers. Tomorrow the caravan arrives in Dahkla, where the race will have, on Sunday, the usual rest day and then leave for Mauritania. The rally ends on the 14th in Dakar where the mythical leg held on the banks of the Lac Rose will take place.

The Africa Eco Race is over for Wuf van Ginkel. The engine of the Iveco Powerstar can not be repaired in a way that it is safe to continue. Gerard de Rooy is therefore on his own in the second week of the rally, but he still sees chances on a podium.

It is the first time in ten years that the Iveco engine has a problem and it is precisely because of this that it can not be solved now.

“We have never had any troubles with the engine. It has proved te be so reliable over the years that we hardly have any parts with us”, explains Gerard de Rooy on the rest day in Dakhla, where earlier today the decision was taken that it was useless for Van Ginkel to continue the race. “We can’t solve it well enough”, adds Van Ginkel. “We have had contact with FPT, the tuner, and they do not think it is justified. The chance of consequential damage is too big. It’s just bad luck. This is the same engine that Team De Rooy has been driving for years, the same as what Gerard and the three trucks in the Dakar Rally have.”

Van Ginkel and his crew will therefore fly back to the Netherlands tomorrow. His truck will be put on the trailer. After the Africa Eco Race, the team will speak with Iveco and the engine will be disassembled.

“The most frustrating thing is that it has nothing to do with the new car,” says Van Ginkel. “It works great. It is a real shame pity that we can’t participate in the second week.”

In the second part of the Africa Eco Race, the dunes in Mauritania are on the menu: exactly what Petronas Team De Rooy Iveco was looking forward to. Gerard de Rooy will have to do it on his own, without Van Ginkel’s backup.

“That means I have to adjust my strategy a bit,” De Rooy says. “I will have to drive a little more carefully.”

In the first week, De Rooy scored a deficit of 2.40.43 compared to standings leader Vladimir Vasilyev; a gap that is bigger than he expected.

“The routes in Morocco were too fast. The cars sometimes drove at 200 km, while we are limited to 150. In the stage yesterday my average speed was 120, while the Mini from Vasilyev reached 147 kilometres per hour.”

Nevertheless, De Rooy has not yet put a podium position out of his mind. Winning will be difficult, he realizes, but in the dunes nothing is impossible.

“There are certainly opportunities there, because the difference in speed is less and my Powerstar is better off in that terrain. Vasilyev only needs to get stuck once and it is very different.”
