PORTUGUESE CHAMPIONSHIP

PORTUGUESE FMP - FEDERAÇÃO DE MOTOCILISMO DE PORTUGAL 2019 CALENDAR

The FMP is the entity that in Portugal regulates motorcycling and is responsible for several competitions of Motorbikes, Quads and SSV (SxS, UTV).

In Portugal  exists a cross-country rallies championship (called CNTT - Campeonato Nacional de Todo o Terreno), made of Baja type races, where the road is marked and no roadbook is needed.  There is also a Rally-Raid Championship (CNRR - Campeonato Nacional de Rally-Raid), where the roads aren't marked, the riders must use a roadbook, but these rades are held in roads open to normal traffic.
The Rally-Raid Network is preparing a partnership with the CNTT promoter - A2 Comunicação, to not only bring you the latest news in record time but also in some cases to offer you special conditions to enter some of the Portuguese races.

Finally, there are also several trophies, including the Super SSV and X-Trophy, the first one for SSV (SxS, UTV) and the second one for motos and quads.  These are endurance events, raced in circuits with tracks similar to Baja, with distances around 15km per lap.
The Rally-Raid Network is an official partner of these two trophies and can offer you special conditions to enter in these events (only for racers outside Portugal).  Contact us to know more.

2017 race name: BAJA DO PINHAL

Appart from the name, for 2018 this race will not suffer big changes. The region where the race will be held will be the same from past editions.

Baja TT Proença a Nova  (known as Baja do Pinhal in 2017) is one of the most demanding and spectacular races of the Portuguese championship.  Held near the very center of the country, the race covers more than 300Km in the mountainous landscapes of the Oleiros, Sertã and Proença-a-Nova. For some editions, the rally visited neighbouring municipalities, but it always kept its characteristics.

This race has some very peculiar characteristics, with many narrow and twisty roads that either descend to the deep valleys or climb up to the top of the mountains. From time to time, on the top of the mountains the road opens wide, allowing the drivers to speed up.
Hard, demanding and unforgiving, this race demands serious driving skills teamed up with a very competitive car for any team to be sucessful here.

This race is held in a region that is know by the many pine trees that covers the local hills and valleys, but unfortunally in 2017 this was the scene of catastrophick wild fires, where not only the forest was almost completly destroyed, but also many people lost their lives and many others lost their houses and belongings.

In the 2018 edition, the race will take place on the 16th and 17th of March.  On the first day, the teams will have to pass for the prologue two times.
On the 17th, the big race day, the teams will face more than 300 kilometres of hard tracks to get to the finish.

The rally is organized by Escuderia de Castelo Branco.

Currently known as BAJA TT CAPITAL DOS VINHOS DE PORTUGAL, the race organized by SAR-Motorismo in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal, had during its three decade long history many names, often related with the main sponsor.
Being a regular feature of the Portuguese championship, during all these years something never changed: the huge challenge it offers to the competitors. In some points similar to the world famous Baja Portalegre, this race is fast and demanding.  Aparently easy, but it holds a number of surprises for the drivers, and for that reason it should be faced carefully.
The characteristics of the terrain in the region near Alqueva, the biggest artificial lake in Europe, are loved by most of the teams and drivers, wich made this race one of the favourites in the Portuguese calendar.
The tracks are designed mostly inside forest of cork oaks and holm oak, in some points crossing the wineyards and olive tree plantations of the region, making from this unique landscape one amazing scenery for the race. To complete the picture postal card, the race has a smaller strech draw in the shores of the Alqueva lake.
The Race HQ is usually located in the beautiful town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, deep inside Alentejo Region, one of the pearls of Portugal, still very preserved and unknown to most of the tourists that visit the country.
Foreign competitors can find here a challenge similar to the FIA Bajas, where the usually big entry list of competitors  completes what can be an amazing racing weekend.
In the past years, the race started also to receive motorbikes, quads and SSVs from the Portuguese championship, making this rally the second biggest in Portugal, right after Baja Portalegre.

OFICIAL PRESENTATION OF THE 2017 EDITION.
{youtube ZHeYcl6ca38}

First held in June 1987, the Baja Portalegre was the first cross country rally event to be held in Portugal, taking place in the city of Portalegre (interestingly enough). Created by Clube Aventura, an ex Dakar Rally driver, the event took some four years to come to life and required all sorts of planning and assistance by the local authorities.
Some of rallying’s biggest names have competed at the Baja Portalegre over the years, and almost every year there’s a ‘mini Dakar’ feel to the parc ferme and service areas, especially with some of the huge Dakar support trucks seen lining the pits. Big dollar prototype-style race buggies share work space with almost factory looking SUVs and dual cab pickups.
The race is by far the most important in the Portuguese Championship and the biggest in the European Calendar, getting more entries than any other race.
From the 1st race, that Baja Portalegre gained a special status, unique and very own.  Every single cross-country rider and driver in Portugal want's to take part in this race. For some this is even the only race they enter in all the year, and more than getting to the top positions, they wish to enter and finihs the race.
But not only inside the track this race is unique. The atmosphere sourrounding the race, with thousands of fans that cheeer the racers and transform the calm and relaxing Alentejo landscape and something resembling a huge party.

HISTORY
The Baja of Portalegre was the first cross country event held in Portugal, in June 1987, based in Portalegre city.
In fact, Clube Aventura, headed by José Megre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver, had this event in mind since 1983, but it took him almost four years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and authorization from the local authorities.
As the non competitive cross country events had started in 1982, also organised by Megre and some friends under the banner of Clube Todo-o-Terreno, and as some Portuguese drivers were competing in the Dakar Rally since 1982, (himself one of the works drivers of UMM), Megre had a tremendous success when he launched the first Baja of Portalegre, which was the starting the Cross Country discipline in Portugal.
100 cars and more than 100 bikes entered the first Baja Portalegre, which was run under the name Rali Maratona de Portalegre – sponsored by Finicisa.
The event was run on a circuit of 350 km to be done twice with no stops. Heavy rains and mud made the event a tremendous challenge for drivers, cars and bikes.
The second and third time editions, held the two following years, had the entries doubled and the same mud conditions. On the 4th edition, 250 cars and 450 bikes entered, after a memorable 1989 edition where only 10% of the starters finished!!
Since the first year, the bike race was international and the best riders came to Portalegre. From Serge Bacou, Thierry Charbonnier, Gilles Lalay, Stephane Peterhansel, David Castera, Cyril Esquirol, Richard Sainct, Alain Perez, Thierry Magnaldi, etc.. all have participated in the event.
But only in 1995 and 1996, a foreigner rider won (Richard Sainct and Alain Perez).
