MDC 2025: Annoying third stage for Erik van Loon still ends with third fastest time
The third stage of the Morocco Desert Challenge was anything but smooth for Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar. Despite several setbacks, they still managed to finish third in the SSV class in the Can-Am Maverick R.
“It was a difficult day today,” Erik says shortly after the finish. “We had two flat tires and lost a lot of time because of problems with the jack and the nutgun. On top of that, the stage was not what we expected. In the beginning, there were some piles of sand that had little to do with real dunes, the promised camel grass was not there and then we mainly got a lot of stones and a waypoint that we could not find. We want to put this day behind us quickly.”
Nevertheless, the provisional result shows that Erik and Wouter managed to limit the damage well. With a third time, they show what they are capable of. “The driving itself went well,” says Erik. “I could keep up with Mitchel well, but he does not make mistakes and that makes the difference.”
Tomorrow, a monster stage of no less than 526 kilometers between Boujdour and Smara awaits. The longest stage of this edition takes the participants through impressive gorges, along treacherous marshland and over long fast tracks. Navigation and fuel management will be crucial.
