MDC 2025: Koen Wauters again best in class
A new day, a new story in the Morocco Desert Challenge. Because of an imminent sandstorm in the dunes, the organization decided to neutralize the sixth stage after 200 km, after which the participants took an alternative route to the bivouac in Foum Zguid.
And so the standings were made up to the rolls. “It's unfortunate but I understand the decision of the race management,” said Pascal Feryn. “I like driving in the dunes but safety comes first. With us in the bivouac everything is fine but you can see a little further on that something is going on there. The air is tight there. Today I had trouble getting going. The first 100 km I also felt a little tired. Afterwards it went better and I could focus well. That was necessary on this challenging course.” Pascal Feryn, together with Kurt Keysers, finished 27th overall and 8th in the T1.1 class. In the overall standings, the duo placed 18th and 3rd in their class.
With a smile from ear to ear, Koen Wauters arrived in the bivouac. Together with co-pilot Tom De Leeuw, they won the overall classification in class T1.1 for the third time. “Today was a very cassante stage that was quite dangerous at times. My first estimation was that you could lose more time today than gain and so on all those bad stretches I always rode with the necessary reserve. And there were a lot of bad stretches. Every time you thought you could drive a little faster there was something treacherous and unannounced where the baby carriages and the T1+ cars with their big wheels could go very fast. If we wanted to follow that pace there would have been severe consequences and so I didn't. Tom navigated very smartly today so we actually didn't lose that much and we were able to win our class again. So all in all a good day. Although it wasn't the most pleasant to ride. We are in the bivouac and already satisfied with winning our class again.” In the standings, Koen is 29th in the standings after his bad luck on Monday and the associated penalty time.
Nicola Feryn and David Van Doren (Toyota Landcruiser) finished 31st. They move up to 24th in the standings. In the trucks, Cedric Feryn, Bjorn Burgelman and Alexander Peeters finished 5th. In the standings they move up to 5th place.
Thursday evening there will be a mechanics party in the bivouac with guest deejay Zohra.
