Dakar 2024: António Maio getting closer to the Top 20
Yamaha rider continues to climb positions in the general classification
António Maio has already completed the third stage of the Dakar Rally where he once again managed to climb positions in the general classification of the competition by finishing the 438 km timed period, of the stage that linked Al Duwadimi to Al Salamiya, in 22nd place. The Yamaha rider spent 4h59m47s completing this complex journey, punctuated by large sections of dunes, and now occupies 24th place overall, just 8 minutes from the coveted Top 20. After this stage, the Yamaha rider is still 15th among Rally riders GP.
“Another stage has been completed. I managed to set a good pace and was always following the riders in front. We reached a very difficult section of dunes that I managed to overcome well, but towards the end of the special, I lost a lot of time on one note and ended up losing focus. However, I'm in good shape physically and the bike is impeccable. Since today is the first part of the marathon stage, Bruno only has 2 hours to do the maintenance, and then we will head to different bivouacs. Today I will spend the night in an exclusive camp for the race pilots”, said António Maio.
The fourth stage of the 2024 Dakar Rally takes place tomorrow. It will be the second stage of the marathon-stage that will lead the caravan to Al-Hofuf. The selective sector will consist of 299km and will be particularly challenging in terms of navigation.
NOTE: After the statements made by the pilot, he suffered a penalty of 13 m10s. The reasons that led to this penalty will be revealed in due course.
