Bruno Santos was in excellent form on the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally 2024, which linked Al-Hofuf and Shubaytah. The Torres Vedras rider was the second fastest of the "Rookies" and took a remarkable 9th place among the Rally 2 competitors.
At the controls of a Husqvarna, Bruno Santos completed the 118km selective sector entirely in the dunes of the famous Rub' al-Khālī (Empty Quarter) in 1h42m32s, ranking 23rd overall, a result that allows him to climb back up the overall table. Thus, after five rounds, the driver is in 20th place in Rally 2, moving up in the overall standings to 36th place and maintaining his 4th place among the "Rookies".
"It's been a long, cold day. Today we reached the Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world, on a day punctuated with lots of dunes and sand. Tomorrow, in the sixth stage, we'll do the 48-hour special, a journey we're all very much looking forward to because it's going to be a real challenge to stay in the desert at night, cut off from everything. Today was a very good day. I rolled pretty well, but I made a mistake and entered a point where I shouldn't have, which is why I'll have to take a penalty, which is a shame. But it's part of the race and there's still a lot of Dakar ahead of us," said Bruno Santos.
Tomorrow sees the sixth stage of the 2024 Dakar Rally, with a selective sector of 584 timed kilometers. This day will be marked by an innovative challenge established in this edition of the race. In the 48H Crono challenge, each competitor will have to stop at 16:00 and camp in one of the six rest areas that dot the route of the special. On arrival, the drivers will receive basic camping equipment and enough provisions to spend the night in the desert completely cut off from the world.
