Baja Portalegre 2025: Bitter retirement doesn’t overshadow Nuno Matos’ strong performance
The Baja Portalegre 500, the most iconic event in Portuguese cross-country racing, ended bitterly for Nuno Matos and Ricardo Claro.
The duo was forced to retire about 70 km from the finish line, already in the third and final selective sector, after their Amarok Proto suffered a transmission failure. At the time of retirement, the team was running 3rd in the T3 category and 11th overall in SS3, right on the doorstep of the Top 10 — the result of a steadily improving performance throughout the race.
In an event that always holds special meaning and attracts the largest crowd of the championship, Nuno Matos, despite being affected by a long stop on the first day, consistently showed an excellent pace, confirming both the potential of the project and the team’s determination.
“It was an incredible race, with a fantastic atmosphere and an amazing crowd supporting us along the entire route. Until the moment we had to retire, the pace and consistency of our Amarok Proto were very promising,” said Nuno Matos, expressing his pride in competing “at home” and in front of such a passionate audience.
The driver also thanked Ricardo Claro “for his outstanding work, both inside and outside the car,” as well as the entire team, sponsors, and the fans for their incredible support throughout the weekend.
Despite the unfortunate outcome, the team leaves their “home” Baja with positive signs and renewed confidence ahead of the final challenge of the Portuguese Cross-Country Championship, the Baja de Lagos, taking place from 21 to 23 November.
