  • The Repsol Toyota Rally Team driver suffered an off-track excursion at kilometer 109, hitting a rock and damaging a wheel, which forced him to stop for nearly an hour.
  • Although co-driver Txema Villalobos managed to repair the damage, Esteve was forced to drive the remaining 200 kilometers under very difficult conditions, without rear brakes.
  • “This hasn’t been our best Rally Raid Portugal, but we’re learning a lot. Today, in a corner over a crest, we hit a rock and broke the driveshaft and suspension joint. The car is working fine now and I’m satisfied with how we overcame the setbacks,” explained Esteve.

The Portuguese Rally Raid once again put the resilience of the Repsol Toyota Rally Team to the test on Stage 3. Esteve and Villalobos had to dig deep to recover from adversity, completing more than 300 competitive kilometers despite the off-track incident at km 109.

The day had started positively, with the Spanish duo setting a steady pace in the opening sections. However, in a sharp left-hander just after a crest, the rear of their Toyota Hilux T1+ slid off the track, striking a rock that broke the driveshaft and suspension joint.

Fortunately, they carried the necessary spare parts on board, and Villalobos – once again showing his mechanical expertise – managed to repair the car in just under an hour. Even so, Esteve had to continue without rear brakes, driving delicately but consistently, maintaining competitive pace and avoiding mistakes all the way to the finish in Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz). He crossed the line 31st in the Ultimate class and holds 27th overall – another clear example of his determination.

“Of course, we’d prefer these issues not to happen, but they’re part of racing. This experience will help us arrive better prepared for the Rally of Morocco and to finish these last two days in Portugal as strongly as possible,” Esteve added.

Villalobos praised his teammate: “It was a very intense day. The repair took us 52 minutes, but completing more than 200 kilometers without rear brakes, at a solid pace and without mistakes, is an incredible achievement. Isidre once again proved his ability to overcome any situation.”

This Saturday, the fourth and penultimate stage of Rally Raid Portugal will be contested. The route covers 530 km in total, with 274 km against the clock, starting in Badajoz and leading the competitors back into Portugal, finishing in Lisbon.
