Monte Gordo Sand Race 2024: Todd Kellett (Bikes) and Keveen Rochereau (Quads) won the first day of the Monte Gordo Sand Race
Just like last year, the Algarve woke up sunny at the end of November to host the second edition of the Monte Gordo Sand Race, the fifth and penultimate stage of the FIM Sand Races World Cup. With thousands of spectators watching along the beach, the motorcycle race was marked by a clear dominance of the Englishman Todd Kellett, World Cup leader, who, riding a Yamaha, prevailed against the Frenchmen Valentin Madoulaud and Jeremy Hauquier. This trio completed 29 laps on a renewed layout circuit, one more than the seven drivers who completed the Top 10 on that first day of the Monte Gordo Sand Race. Yentel Martens on Fantic, the winner of this race in 2023 was now 4th, Damien Prévot, the first of the veterans, was in 7th place, and Luis Outeiro on Yamaha closed the Top 10, being the best among the Portuguese. Amandine Verstappen triumphed among the women and Paolo Maschio among the Juniors.
The first heat of the Quad was won by Frenchman Keveen Rochereau on a Honda, who prevailed against his compatriot Pablo Violet on a Yamaha, with Belgian Olivier Vandendijck in third place. This trio completed 17 laps of a race that lasted one hour. Next positions, with one lap less, for the Frenchman Axel Dutrie on the Yamaha, the first of the veterans, and the Belgian Glenn Swarte on the Honda. Alois Waloszekn and Nathanaelle Abgrall triumphed, respectively, among the juniors and women.
The Monte Gordo Sand Race now heads to a second and final day of competition, with the bikes starting at 1:45 pm and the quad bikes at 4:30 pm. The final podium ceremony will take place at 5 p.m.
