  • Fierce disputes mark the first day of the Barretos Rally
  • The second day of the opening event of the Brazilian Rally Raid and Baja confirmed the victories of Francine Rossi (Motorcycles); Conrado Matsumoto (UTV) and Gunter Hinkelmann / Weidner Moreira (Cars)

Minimal differences marked the first day of the 14th Barretos Rally, the opening event of the Brazilian Rally Baja (Motorcycle / UTV) and Rally Raid (Cars) championships. Drivers and navigators faced a 140km special in the city of São Paulo that was made even more enjoyable by the rain the day before, which compacted the ground and reduced the dust.

The day began with the prologue, at Parque do Peão, to determine the starting order. In Baja, there is no route plan and competitors are guided by the signs placed along the route. The Rally Raid, on the other hand, follows the format of events such as the Dakar and Sertões - a logbook tells navigators where to look out for and changes of direction.

Sunday of speed and dust in the interior of São Paulo, with the second day of the 14th Barretos Rally, the event that opened the Brazilian Baja (Moto / UTV) and Rally Raid (Cars) championships. Just like the day before, drivers and navigators faced a 140km timed course in a region of sugar cane fields, very fast, but at the same time with winding stretches that demanded attention. If in two of the three disciplines the champions had already occupied the top step of the podium, in another it was the turn of an unprecedented achievement.

The feat was achieved by Conrado Matsumoto (Can-Am Maverick X3 / Cotton Racing), in the UTVs. The driver from Chapadão do Sul (MS) was the fastest of the day and, as a result, secured overall victory. He beat Nuno Fojo (Polaris RZR Pro R Ultimate / Polaris Racing) and Guilherme Cysne (Polaris RZR Pro R Ultimate / Polaris Racing - GC Rally Team).

"I'm very happy with this result. I started competing in 2021, then won the championship in UT2 and faced several mechanical problems in 2023, but always aiming for the overall. I finally got my first win. The race was very well organized, the signage perfect, the terrain with bumps and uphill sections, very enjoyable to ride," he said.

In the motorcycles, Francine Rossi (Kawasaki KX 450XC / Rossi Rally Team) repeated her 2023 result as the best over the two days. The miner once again had fun riding the route chosen for the event by organizer Rallymakers. He finished ahead of João Paulo Fornazari (Sherco) and Rafael Silvestre (Gasgas 450 / Dust Rally Team). "The Barretos Rally is always special, I've been coming since the first editions. It's an excellent event, very enjoyable to drive. This year it was more pleasure than challenge," he summed up.

Gunter Hinkelmann (Ford Ranger V8 / X Rally) had won the Barretos Rally in 2022, the year the event was also held for cars. He confirmed his familiarity with the region's terrain by repeating the feat, now with Weidner Moreira by his side. The navigator from Minas Gerais returned to Barretos after seven years and helped the duo to the lead in the Brazilian Rally Raid Championship.

"I hadn't raced the Barretos Rally since 2016, I didn't ride in the cars for a while and, when I returned to both of them, we won overall. It took me a while to assimilate the speed, but then everything worked perfectly. Gunter drove a lot. The race had everything: fast roads, winding sections, jumps, it was a test. The organization is once again to be congratulated," said Weidner.

Fernando Bentivoglio, general director of the 14th Barretos Rally, highlighted the success of the edition. "While we're preparing the event, we're always anxious about the reaction of the competitors and what they'll say about what we've done. The feedback was more than positive. Drivers and navigators enjoyed the course and had a lot of fun. Another mission accomplished.
