Rally dos Sertões 2024: Varela brothers score double top positions at Sertões 2nd stage
Rodrigo and Bruno take first places in the competitive UTV category during the special in Goiás
The Dust Family won its first special stage victory of the 32nd edition of the Sertões Rally on Sunday (25), with a double for the Varela Can-AM Monster Energy Team. The Rodrigo Varela/Matheus Mazzei and Bruno Varela/Ari Fiuza duos fought each other for the lead of the day, which ended with Rodrigo/Mazzei, in the Maverick R #102, ahead by just 12s.
The 433 km special opened the competition, despite being the second stage. This is because the first stage was canceled after a bridge collapsed at kilometer 86.5 of the route between Brasília and Formosa (GO). As a result, the peloton moved freely to the city of Goiás, where the start of the second stage of the competition took place in the morning. Bruno and Ari, who won the Super Prime on Friday, started in first position.
Family dispute - For much of the day, Bruno, who drives the Maverick R #110, was on the limit, leading three of the four stages and taking the lead of the special. This scenario would only change in the last section, when Rodrigo took the lead after clocking 5h08min38s, 12 seconds faster than Bruno.
This achievement meant that Rodrigo won the special with a time of 6h13min16s08 on the route made up of bumps, bushes and more than 100 km of footpaths to Santa Maria da Vitória (BA), with Bruno just behind with 6h13min28s86. The third best time came from Denisio do Nascimento/Gunnar Dums, who were 2min43s86 behind Rodrigo/Mazzei.
Reinaldo Varela/Túlio Taniguchi had a good first leg, but had problems in the following ones. Gabriel Varela and navigator Guilherme Holanda were also doing well, achieving times close to those of Rodrigo and Bruno in the second section, but problems in the third section ended up ruining the pair's chances.
The Sertões Rally continues on Monday (26) towards Luís Eduardo Magalhães, still in Bahia, in a stage of 386 km, of which 336 km are timed. The race continues until August 31, when it returns to the Federal District for its conclusion in Brasília.
