Africa Race 2020: Fernando Barreiros enters Mauritania

The Africa Eco Race 2020 entered Mauritania today where the next stages of this long African marathon will take place. The Portuguese team Fernando and Nuno Barreiros maintain the perseverance to finish the race, which disputed its sixth stage, despite the difficulties that they felt in the first selective sectors held in Morocco.

After a good start in the first stage where they took second place between T2, several mechanical difficulties ceased the progression of the Portuguese who were stuck in the desert in the second and third stages of the race due to transmission problems. But these complications were not enough to stop the pair that continued to persevere to fulfill their main goal of reaching the end of the competition. Also, to be noted that Fernando Barreiros reached in the fifth stage, that took place on Saturday, the third place among the T2.

Fernando Barreiros, who made his debut in this 12th edition of the Africa Eco Race in long off-road races, admits that it has been a difficult race, but the most important thing is to finish and to be able to learn more to come back to the competition and fight for more prominently places: “This competition has been a great learning experience for me. I am very happy to arrive on the day of rest and I am eager to return because I think I may be able to fight for victory in T2. This year we will use all the learning we are taking to reach the end. It is a very beautiful race with excellent organization. It’s a race that is making me fall in love. Despite the tiredness of the last days I feel very well. We hope now to have a quieter week and recover so we can reach the goal of finishing the race”, said Fernando Barreiros.

The Africa Eco Race's seventh special will depart from Chami bivouac to arrive directly at Aidzidine, a village located between Akjoujt and Atar. This selective sector of 477.95 will be fulfilled almost entirely off-piste and therefore includes pure navigation with no existing route. This stage will be varied and includes dune crossings and a relatively rolling but still strong last part in navigation.
