For years, the Rallye du Maroc has counted as the most important test for teams who want to prepare seriously for the Dakar. In motorcycles and cars, all major (factory) teams are present. In the truck category there are 8 teams entered.
Gert: "The Rallye du Maroc is always a serious competition and a good test. Although I would like to see more sand in the rallies in Morocco, we drive a lot over stones and hard surfaces. That's a good test for the chassis, to see if it's strong enough.''
The organization of the Rallye du Maroc is in the hands of David Castera, who is also director of the Dakar. Castera says that this edition of the Rally du Maroc can be seen as a small Dakar.
"In terms of engines, we have pushed the limits a little bit and therefore it is good to see what the truck does with the hot conditions in Morocco. So far we have been able to work through that well in the tests in Poland. Sand, of course, we're also going to get a lot in Saudi Arabia, in Morocco we can get the feeling again and see if the truck gets the most out of it. I like driving through dunes, it remains a challenge to drive through them as fast as possible'' Gert says.
From Friday we will report daily from the Rallye du Maroc and follow the team's progress closely.
